Practical guide

Prepare more than one way to pay

Mobile payment is common in China, but international patients should also carry a usable bank card and some RMB cash. Hospital payment rules vary.

Payment apps, supported cards, limits and fees can change. Check the current app prompts, issuing bank and hospital instructions.

Before arrival

  • Install Alipay or Weixin Pay from an official app store
  • Try registering with the phone number and identity details requested by the app
  • Link an eligible international card and ask the issuing bank about overseas transactions
  • Keep a physical card and RMB cash as backup
  • Save the bank’s support number separately

Before paying a hospital

Ask what is accepted

Confirm mobile payment, international card, domestic card, cash and any deposit requirement.

Request written estimates

Check whether tests, medicines, admission, procedures, rooms and follow-up are included.

Keep official receipts

Save payment records and request the documents needed for insurance or reimbursement.

Protect payment information

Do not send full card details, passwords, verification codes or payment screenshots by email.
